We are at least 32,000 strong – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Two-Spirit (LGBTT) people in Manitoba aged 55 or over.We grew up when homosexuality was commonly believed to be a sin, a crime or a mental illness.Many of us have been active in the struggle to gain our human and legal rights to become a proud, legitimate community within our diverse Canadian society. We have survived!And yet, the work is not done! As we age, many LGBTT people in Manitoba fear receiving inappropriate and insensitive care in a long-term care home setting. We can do better!We are volunteers on the 55+ Positive Space Initiative, a committee of the Rainbow Resource Centre, working to ensure that LGBTT people in Manitoba will not be forced http://www.rainbowresourcecentre.org/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=pageback into the closet entering a care facility. [1] Depending on the source, it is estimated that at least 7 to 10 % or more of the Canadian population is LGBTT, ­ and that number could be higher in large urban centres like Winnipeg and Brandon.
